NEW ORLEANS – The Algiers levee of the Mississippi River will be set aglow on Saturday, as the Algiers Holiday Bonfire, which includes a massive installation, FLOODWALL, by artist Jana Napoli is lighted by City Council President Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson, District C Councilmember Kristin Gisleson-Palmer, Algiers Economic Development District President Christopher Kane and the artist herself. The event is supported by the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana.

“The bonfire structure is always an artistic endeavor by the fire department,” Kane said, “and this year it is created from a work of art that the artist wants to ‘send up’ on behalf of the people of New Orleans as they move forward with their lives. It’s a collective offering we can make together on Saturday.”

But this is New Orleans, so the event will certainly not be somber. It will kick off at 5 p.m. with live music from the U.S. Navy Band, Wanda Rouzan and a Taste of New Orleans, James Andrews, Glen David Andrews and the Algiers Brass Band. Food and beverages will be available for sale. A riverboat parade with Santa will signal the bonfire lighting at approximately 8:30 p.m. with a second line from the stage to the three-tiered structure.

Napoli’s massive art installation is constructed from 700 drawers collected from victims’ homes after Hurricane Katrina. Each in inscribed with a statement from the owner, noting its use in the household. (FLOOWDALL.com). The exhibition has traveled throughout the U.S. and abroad, with its recent return to New Orleans is its final destination. Owners of the drawers have been invited to attend the event.

“These household drawers restore to us a part of what the levee failures shattered,” Napoli said. “FLOODWALL stands witness to the magnitude of devastation, but also to the transformative power imbued in everyday life.”

Speaking of restoration, the bonfire was long a tradition at Algiers Point until Katrina. It was reinstated last year by Councilmember Gisleson Palmer, Council President Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson and the Algiers Economic Development Foundation. The location is near the Algiers Ferry terminal just beyond the Cultural Village, where recent work by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has created a large open space. Due to anticipated large crowds, visiting the site via ferry, bicycle or on foot is recommended.

Sponsors of the event include City of New Orleans, State of Louisiana, Algiers Charter School Association/ Algiers Technical Academy, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, Conoco Phillips, Chalmette Refining LLC, Whitney Bank, Crescent Towing, TCI Transport, WWL TV, nola.com, Camp Dresser McKee, Dash Lumber, Capital One Bank, Harrah’s Casino, Holiday Inn Westbank, Entergy New Orleans, French Market Corporation, Southern Eagle, Ochsner Medical Center- Westbank Campus, River Parishes Disposal and The Cultural Village. Additional support comes from the New Orleans Fire Department, Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman, New Orleans Levee District, New Orleans Port Authority, New Orleans Police Department and the Offices of District C Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer and Council President Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy.

Visit Algiers for Holiday Fun This Year!

There are lots of choices for holiday fun in New Orleans, but the most activity in one place this year will be in Algiers during the Algiers Holiday Festival and Bonfire taking place on the beautiful Algiers Riverfront Saturday, Dec. 3 from 5PM to 9PM.

The centerpiece of the Algiers Holiday Festival is the annual bonfire, which is constructed by the New Orleans Fire Department on the levee adjacent to the ferry terminal. The bonfire was a holiday tradition for many years prior to Katrina and was revived in 2010 by District C Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer with help from AEDF. This year’s event is presented by AEDF, the State of Louisiana and City of New Orleans, as well as Councilmember Palmer and Council President Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson. In addition to the city and state, sponsors to date include Southern Eagle Distributors, Capital One and BP.

This year’s pyre will include the burning of a massive art installation entitled FLOODWALL. Appropriately named, the piece features 700 dresser drawers that were collected by artist Jana Napoli after Hurricane Katrina and creatively documents what residents lost in the storm. The purpose of burning the art is to allow the public to participate in a final, collective release of Katrina woes. Prior to the bonfire, a section of FLOODWALL will be on display at Warren’s Corner, 600 Patterson Street (across from the Old Point Bar), for three weekends: November 19-20, November 26-27 and December 3-4.

The festival and bonfire will also feature local artists including Wanda Rouzan and a Taste of New Orleans, the U.S. Navy Brass Band and Glen David Andrews. A riverboat parade with Santa will precede the igniting of the bonfire at approximately 8:30 p.m. Food and beverages from local vendors will be available for sale.

“We are taking New Orleans holiday traditions in a new direction – to the West Bank of the city,” said AEDF President Chris Kane. “We have events for adults and for families throughout December, and we expect to have record people visit our community this holiday season. This is a fun way to generate economic opportunities and show off our culturally diverse historic neighborhoods.”

AEDF Highlights 20 YEARS OF Economic Leadership

More than $1 Billion in New Economic Development For Algiers & New Orleans Region

For the past 20 years, the trailblazing efforts of the Algiers Economic Development Foundation (AEDF) have left an indelible impression on businesses and economic developments in Algiers and throughout the Greater New Orleans Region. This year alone, AEDF has played major roles in strengthening business and community alliances, local education, business retention and workforce development, the cultural economy, citizen engagement and respected relationships with elected officials.

AEDF highlighted recent and founding accomplishments, the future of Algiers and the critical role that public-private partnerships will have in strengthening New Orleans’ economic blueprint at AEDF’s Annual Business Luncheon on Wednesday, July 13, 2011. The luncheon took place at English Turn Golf and Country Club, 1 Clubhouse Drive, New Orleans, Louisiana 70131 following a networking reception at 11:00AM. The annual program and lunch commenced at 11:45AM.

Rodrick Miller, President and CEO of the NOLA Business Alliance, delivered the keynote address about his organization’s mission and overall initiatives. WDSU-TV News Anchor Camille Whitworth moderated the event.

“This is a pivotal moment for the Algiers Economic Development Foundation, the Algiers community and the City of New Orleans. Algiers currently has more than $1 billion in new and ongoing economic development projects, which will bolster our economic status, attract new businesses and increase workforce participation among various industries,” said AEDF President Chris Kane.

Rodrick Miller, President and CEO of the New Orleans Business Alliance said, “The story unfolding in Algiers is an exciting one. With the new developments in Federal City and a diverse and engaged population of residents, the Algiers community is proving itself as an unstoppable force for driving economic improvements. The impact of this work will be felt throughout New Orleans and regionally-AEDF and others in the Algiers community cannot be applauded enough for their efforts.”

AEDF recognized past presidents who have charted an unrivaled course for the organization and Algiers during the annual luncheon: Max Rabner, 1991-1992; Stephen Dickey, 1992-1994; Jim Neimeier, 1994-1996; Dwayne Lockett, 1996-1997; Belinda Little-Wood, 1997-1999; Elwood Cahill, Jr., 1999-2001; Paul Richard, 2001-2003; Tyrone Hubbard, 2003-2005; Glenn Orgeron, 2005-2007; and Clayton White, 2007-2009. AEDF also introduced the incoming board members for 2011-2012.

The Algiers Economic Development Foundation was founded in 1991. AEDF’s mission is to help the Algiers community grow and prosper by being a catalyst for economic development that provides for a vibrant business environment.

After AEDF’s most recent Quarterly Business Luncheon, there was an overwhelming response by the community for more information about Federal City as its opening date quickly approaches. If you click on the link below you will be able to see the PowerPoint presentation given by our guests from HRI/ECC, the Algiers Development District (ADD) and the New Orleans Federal Alliance (NOFA). If you continue to scroll down you can read responses from questions submitted at the luncheon. AEDF will continue to work to keep you informed about this initiative as well as other issues that directly impact the Algiers community.

Presentation to AEDF Quarterly Business Luncheon – April 6, 2011

Federal City: An Update and Overview

Questions and Answers

ECONOMICS

1. What are the current plans for development of the riverfront (river side of levee)? We plan to utilize the existing docks and riverfront for river operations.

2. What retail stores are already signed for Federal City? Currently there is a barber shop, dry cleaner, coffee shop, credit union, and four restaurants working through the leasing process. We will announce the names when leases are signed.

3. How do you get information on Information Technology employment opportunities? IT employment/career web sites likely best first bet; as we have needs for anything specific, we explore filling the need through local, regional or national options.

4. How many people will be working in Federal City (military and non-military)? By October 1, 2011, we estimate 2300. This number will rise as the base becomes more accessible to the community and more entrepreneurs, businesses and residents locate to Federal City.

5. What is Federal City’s annual budget? Not applicable. There is no Federal City entity.

6. What is Federal City’s annual payroll? Not applicable. There is no Federal City entity.

7. What is Federal City’s expected annual economic impact for Algiers and for New Orleans? The long term plan calls for $750 million worth of new development over the next 15 years.

8. What is the procurement process for services and products and where will opportunities be posted? As needs arise for services and products, we attempt to find those at the local level, and then look beyond, depending, to the state/regional/national level. Depending on the requirement/need, opportunities are typically posted online.

9. How will employment be phased in over 15 years? Employment opportunities are due to increase over the 15 year build out as more businesses open at Federal City. The initial opening of the Marine Forces Reserve Headquarters will act as a catalyst, along with the Coast Guard Sector Headquarters, for future development. The projected number of full time jobs in 15 years is 10,000 on the Federal City site.

10. How does the community prepare for the jobs that will be offered at Federal City? Job training, education and related work experience.

LIVING/COMMUNITY ISSUES

1. Can more details be provided regarding the security measures surrounding Federal City? Security will be provided for Federal City in some combination of private and public (City of New Orleans). The details are at present being worked out in partnership with the Department of the Navy, New Orleans Federal Alliance, City of New Orleans, Patrician Management and the Master Developers HRI/ECC.

2. Will there be any human support services for veterans and their families? Naval Air Station/Joint Reserve Base, Belle Chasse has all of those functions in place now. The Marine Corps will support their personnel once the new Marine Support Facility opens in Algiers. The local military community has always had a very robust support system in place and that will not change in the future.

3. What will be done to encourage Federal City staff to live in Algiers primarily as well as New Orleans in general? Federal City is being developed as a 24 hour sustainable community with all the amenities needed to live work and play. We believe that carrying out the master plan will create a neighborhood that will attract people to live work and play at Federal City.

4. Do you have a plan to collaborate with neighborhood organizations? New Orleans Federal Alliance has collaborated with local neighborhood associations for the past 7 years and has had many neighborhood meetings and speaking engagements with Algiers churches and civic groups over that time. We will continue to do so moving forward.

5. Are the 1500 Marines that will occupy the Reserve HQ already housed locally? If so, where? If not, are they moving in from outside the New Orleans area? The majority of the Marines and civilians are located in the metropolitan area but approximately 400 are moving from Kansas City, Missouri.

6. Who is the Commandant/Principal of the NOMMA? Commandant is Col Bill Davis. He will be coming on full time after he retires. Principal is Dr. Cecilia Garcia.

7. What healthcare services will be available? Some preliminary discussions with healthcare providers have taken place. HRI/ECC will announce any news regarding this issue when it is appropriate.

SUSTAINABILITY

1. What happens to the USMC buildings should Marines decide to leave after their lease expires? Who takes over and what would take their place? The Marines will own the building and the 29 Acres beneath the secure compound. They will not be leasing the building.

2. What does the state’s unwillingness to be leaseholder say about the long-term viability of the entire project? Absolutely nothing. The State was willing to provide funds to the New Orleans Federal Alliance to develop Federal City and manage that development. The 3- 5 year phases of development indicates a well designed and thought out process endorsed by noted urban planners, Duany Plater, Zyberk , the State of Louisiana, the City of New Orleans , Algiers Development District and many other major stakeholders. That speaks of immense faith in the concept and management of the project which to date has consistently been ahead of schedule and under budget.

3. Could a brief overview of the sustainability of the project be provided? The Federal City team has created a Green Code to accompany the master plan and Smart Code that will guide development over the life of the project to create a sustainable neighborhood.

4. After transfer to Algiers Development District (ADD) and after 75 year lease has expired, who owns Federal City and/or its properties? Under the current lease arrangement, the property would return to the Department of the Navy unless the lease is extended.

The Algiers Economic Development Foundation (AEDF) today announced its schedule for the fourth annual Wednesdays on the Point Summer Riverfront Concert Series. The 8-week series will take place every Wednesday beginning June 22 and running through August 10. Concerts will be held at the foot of the ferry terminal in historic Algiers Point and begin at 6pm and end at 9pm.

“This is just another way that AEDF fulfills its mission of presenting Algiers in a positive light, providing an economic impact on our community and at the same time providing a place for families and friends to gather and enjoy the summer together,” said AEDF President Chris Kane. Wednesdays on the Point began three years ago as an effort by local businesses to draw visitors to Algiers Point during the slower summer months. Since its inception, the series has continued to grow and is expected to draw more than one thousand music goers each week. This year’s lineup is a great mix of musical styles and genres including acts such as Amanda Shaw, Luther Kent, Otra Latin Band and The Wild Magnolias Mardi Gras Indians.

The highlight of the series is the special Fourth of July concert featuring live performances from Bonerama, The Stooges Brass Band and Lil Red and Big Bad. “We’re certainly excited about the Fourth of July,” said Barbara Waiters, AEDF’s Executive Director. “Good music, great food and a fireworks show that will definitely light up the summer sky.” All concerts are free to the public and along with a great musical performance; guests will be able to enjoy food and beverages from local vendors and other activities for the family.
