Mayor, Trombone Shorty Visit Martin Behrman

Grammy nominee Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu played the blues classic “St. James Infirmary” in front of a surprised crowd of students at Martin Behrman Charter Academy on March 19. The Mayor, who played the trumpet, visited the school in coordination with Andrews’ music foundation “Horns for Schools.” The foundation provides custom designed instruments for New Orleans-area schools. The instruments are professional grade and designed by Andrews. The “Horns for Schools” initiative is a non-profit organization. Photo courtesy the Algiers Charter Schools Association.

Economic Impact of Regional Participation on the Westbank

Regional Participation is an Asset to Sustainable
Economic Growth & Job Creation

New Orleans, LA) – Business and community leaders on the Westbank of New Orleans agree that economic development will expand substantially as regional efforts are aligned.  As such, The Economic Impact of Regional Participation on the Westbank will serve as the topic of discussion at the Algiers Economic Development Foundation’s Quarterly Business Luncheon, Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at English Turn Golf & Country Club form 11:15 am to 1:00 pm.  Leaders from Orleans, Plaquemines and Jefferson Parishes  are expected to attend the event, which will take place at English Turn Golf & Country Club.

Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser will deliver the keynote address.  Jennifer Barnett,  Regional Business Strategies Coordinator for the Workforce Investment Board Partnership, Region One, will also offer a brief presentation on the top industries in Algiers, Louisiana and how they can serve as a catalyst for a broader trade area.

Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said, “It is essential that we work as a region to expand and protect our economic base and growth. We can’t let the promotion of this area stop at city or parish lines. We must work as a team to help our region.

Nungesser added, “More people come to work in Plaquemines Parish every day than those who actually live here, so developing jobs in Plaquemines benefits this whole region. It is nowhere more true than in Plaquemines Parish where 80 percent of the workers come from other parishes to work. It’s proven that economic development in Plaquemines greatly benefits the whole region.”

AEDF Board President Christopher Kane said, “A regional approach is vital to the success of the various economic stabilizes in Algiers and our neighboring parishes.  Developments like Federal City and industries such as education, healthcare, transportation, oil and petro-chemicals all benefit from regional participation.”

The AEDF Quarterly Business Luncheon will start with a networking reception from 11:15am to noon.  The luncheon program will take place from noon to 1:00pm.  The event is sponsored by Kindred Hospital of Algiers, Adams & Reese and Three Fold Consultants.  For additional information, visit www.algierseconomic.com.
