This year, the Ferry Foundation joins the Algiers Economic Development Foundation in presenting the 25th Algiers Bonfire & Concert on December 8th from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on the levee adjacent to the Algiers Ferry Landing.
Co-emceed by WDSU News Anchor Norman Robinson, Councilwoman-at-large Jackie Brechtel Clarkson and Fay Faron, New Orleans’ very own “Ferry Godmother,” this year’s event features the music of John Autin, the Marine Band New Orleans, and the JMB Brass Band. There will be vendors for every palate, and soft drinks, beer and wine for purchase. But the “star of the show” is, of course, the Bonfire.
This year’s theme is the 25th anniversary of the bonfire in New Orleans. To commemorate the occasion, the New Orleans Fire Department has constructed a 25′ tall “birthday cake” just to burn
Bonfires up and down Louisiana levees have long been a Cajun tradition designed to guide Santa Claus as he delivered his goodies to children on Christmas Eve. Some 30 years ago, The City of New Orleans adopted the tradition, locating the Bonfire alongside the Algiers ferry landing and using the event to kick the Christmas Season into high gear. Then, in 2005, the Algiers Bonfire fell victim to Hurricane Katrina. With much of the city still in ruins, starting a big fire on the levee was the last thing on city administrators’ minds. In 2010, the Algiers Economic Development Foundation picked up the torch and produced the event to record crowds. This year, The Ferry Foundation joins AEDF in continuing the beloved tradition.
Long live SANTA and long live the Algiers Bonfire & Concert!
And yet, the Algiers Bonfire & Concert is just the icing on the cake. Beginning at 11 a.m., Algiers Point will welcome their neighbors from across the river and across the region to the day-long events of the Algiers Point Home Tour and Holidays on the Point, making it a very special “Super Saturday” indeed. Those who take the ferry might just encounter the Christmas music of Hazel & the Delta Ramblers or Girl Scouts in reindeer ears handing out candy canes.
Join us for this very special “Super Saturday in Algiers.” And remember, the Bonfire is Algiers gift to the community.
