AEDF’s 2010 Wednesdays on the Point summer series started June 16 and runs for 12 Wednesdays concluding on September 1. Concerts will run from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. each week. Jon Cleary headlines week nine of the summer festival as Wednesdays on the Point celebrates Wine Down Wednesday this Wednesday, August 11 from 6-9pm. The 12-week series will be held every Wednesday beginning June 16 through September in historic Algiers Point.
About Wednesdays on the Point:
Wednesdays on the Point began two years ago in hopes of bringing visitors to Algiers Point during the slow summer months. Since its inception, the series has grown exponentially and is expected to draw approximately a thousand guests each week. The festival will include free concerts and themed weekly events. The lineup includes Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Amanda Shaw and Jon Cleary to name a few. Also, local restaurants will be selling specialty dishes and bars will be offering beer and wine for purchase as part of the celebration. Admission to the 12-week concert series is free. The first event will be at the Ferry Dock in front of the Historic Algiers Courthouse. Thereafter, the series will take on the form of a block party and will be held outside various businesses in the Point. The final four concerts will return to the Ferry Dock in front of the courthouse. A weekly theme has been created to draw various groups to Algiers to enjoy the concerts.
Founded in 1719, Algiers Point is one of the oldest neighborhoods in New Orleans. “The Point” as locals call it, is located directly across the Mississippi from the French Quarter. Ferry’s run every fifteen minutes between Historic Algiers Point and Downtown New Orleans. Extended ferry service between Gretna and Algiers Point will run every Wednesday until 9:45PM through September 1, 2010.
